Production #9: Washing & Drying

Washing & Drying is done at various stages throughout the entire Ajrakh Cloth making process. There are several different steps & processes. For example, before dying begins, the cloth is washed in a solution of water, soda ash, castor oil, and camel dung. This solution shrinks & bleaches the cloth, to prepare it for printing.
The raw, machine-stitched, 100% cotton material comes from Erode, a town in Tamil Nadu.
All together, from the time the raw material is received until the time that the fabric is fully complete, it takes about 2-3 weeks to complete one piece of Ajrakh Print material. This 2-3 week process includes the steps of washing, dying, block printing, stitching, and etc.
